Definition of the Ellipse - Conic Sections

Ellipses are the closed type of conic section - A plane curve tracing the intersection of a cone with a plane: See Figure 1

An ellipse (highlighted in green in Figure 1) is obtained as the intersection of a cone with a plane. Note that the plane intersecting the cone will create an ellipse if the angle of the plane in reference to the cone base is greater than zero, and less than the angle of the cone slope. If the cone is a right angle cone, then the angle of the plane would be between 0 and 45 degrees.
